From Exhibition Buzz to Race Evolution: Global Fitness Industry Enters New Era of Diversified Growth in March 2026
In mid-to-late March, the global fitness industry continues to emit active signals.
In mid-to-late March, the global fitness industry continues to emit active signals. From the recently concluded IWF Shanghai International Fitness Expo at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center, to F45's new fitness competition Peak500 developed in partnership with Red Bull, to the rising momentum of natural bodybuilding events and growing calls for industry standardization – a picture of diversified evolution and accelerated iteration is unfolding. The Runtoway Fitness team, with over two decades of international trade experience, notes that through these intensive industry dynamics, one can clearly capture the profound transformations and structural opportunities underway in the global fitness market.
Exhibition Review: IWF Shanghai Reflects New Directions in Industry Upgrading
From March 13-15, the 13th IWF Shanghai International Fitness Expo was successfully held at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center. Multiple core metrics hit record highs: exhibition area expanded by over 30% compared to the previous edition, bringing together more than 1,000 domestic and international brands. Domestic visitor pre-registrations increased by 40% year-on-year, while overseas visitor pre-registrations saw even more significant growth. These figures indicate that amid the profound evolution of global trade patterns, China's sports and fitness industry, with its comprehensive supply chain and innovation capabilities, has become a "land of opportunity" in the eyes of global buyers.
A highlight of this year's expo was the "AI Sports & Smart Fitness Zone." From AI visual recognition-based workout systems to intelligent customized strength equipment and one-stop smart fitness solutions, the zone vividly demonstrated the transformation of sports and fitness from "traditional manufacturing" to "smart services." The "AI Sports & Smart Fitness Ecosystem Conference" held during the expo brought together industry elites to discuss technological development, scenario applications, and ecosystem construction in intelligent fitness.
Notably, the Ningjin fitness equipment industry cluster made a strong appearance at IWF with 126 enterprises and nearly 10,000 square meters of exhibition space – ranking first in both overall and individual scale at this year's expo. Exhibited products covered over 1,000 varieties including cardio equipment, strength training, wellness devices, and Pilates, fully demonstrating Ningjin's profound strength as a "National Sports Industry Demonstration Base." Data shows that Ningjin's commercial fitness equipment holds over 70% domestic market share, with products exported to more than 170 countries and regions. In 2025, the cluster's total industry output value exceeded 17 billion RMB.
Race Evolution: F45 Launches Peak500 with Red Bull, Functional Fitness Sector Continues to Segment
In the functional fitness event space, the global competitive landscape is welcoming a new player. On March 28, renowned boutique fitness brand F45 Training will officially launch its own standardized fitness competition – Peak500. Developed in partnership with Red Bull, the brand's official global energy drink partner, this event marks a strategic step for F45 in the rapidly growing hybrid fitness sector.
Peak500 builds on the legacy of the F45 Playoffs format with a 30-minute, five-station structure: participants spend five minutes at each of five disciplines – the bike erg, dumbbell devil's press and lunges, ski erg, shuttle sprints combined with barbell thrusters, and the row erg – with one-minute rest between stations. Each station carries a maximum score of 100 points – representing 500 points in total, the 'Peak' from which the competition takes its name. For elite competitors who reach the 100-point cap across all five stations, remaining clock time is used as a tiebreaker.
Participants can compete individually or in pairs, across male, female and mixed categories, with scores tracked and benchmarked against a global leaderboard through the F45 Training App. Tom Dowd, CEO of F45 parent company FIT House of Brands, described Peak500 as the beginning of a larger platform, with ambitions to grow the competition into a regular fixture on the global fitness calendar – one that athletes train specifically to compete in across the F45 network and beyond.
The launch arrives at a moment of considerable momentum in the hybrid fitness competition sector. Alongside HYROX, UK-based ATHX – backed by Adidas – is expanding into the US market, while newly launched XENOM, which positions itself as the "Decathlon of Fitness" and recently secured a $15 million seed round, is set to make its debut in late June at the Dallas Cowboys' practice facility, with further events planned in London, Miami and Paris. Fitness competitions are evolving from a single phenomenon into a diverse and segmented landscape.
Meanwhile, HYROX's momentum continues to surge. From March 21-22, the third HYROX Beijing competition will take place. Dubbed "indoor triathlon," this event has become a trendy sport among new middle-class white-collar workers due to its low barrier to entry, high completion rate of 98%, and flexible team participation options. Data shows that from nearly 2,000 participants at the first Beijing event in November 2024 to nearly 7,000 at the Shanghai event in November 2025, the growth rate is approximately 250%. In 2026, HYROX China will add Guangzhou and Chengdu stations.
Industry Trend: Natural Bodybuilding Heats Up, Calls for Standardization Grow
Amid widespread concern over doping issues, bodybuilding events adhering to the "natural bottom line" are gaining more industry recognition. On March 14, the 2026 DMS Natural Championship Shanghai successfully concluded at the IWF International Fitness Expo. As a benchmark event in China's natural bodybuilding scene, DMS has accumulated billions of online exposure and profound industry influence, transforming this Shanghai event into a natural bodybuilding spectacle combining professional competition with mass participation.
This year's competition featured 19 categories covering Open, Rookie, Masters, and Model divisions. Notably, the event strictly implemented post-competition urine sample collection, sending samples to WADA-accredited laboratories for professional testing, defending the event's natural and pure status with the world's strictest anti-doping standards.
Wang Xuan, founder of DMS Fitness & Bodybuilding Events, stated: "At a critical juncture when the doping black market in the bodybuilding circle has been exposed and the industry urgently needs to clean up and get back on track, DMS proves through action: true strength comes from day-after-day sweat, not shortcuts; true glory belongs to every person who stands on stage clean and pure."
This trend stands in sharp contrast to recently exposed cases of "anabolic steroid" abuse. Investigations reveal that unscrupulous individuals are packaging unapproved veterinary drugs or illegal preparations as "muscle-building miracle pills," peddling them to fitness enthusiasts through social platforms, resulting in multiple cases of severe health damage. Calls for industry standardization and healthy development are growing louder.
Manufacturing Upgrade: Industrial Clusters Strengthen Brand Globalization Capabilities
On the fitness equipment manufacturing front, industrial cluster integration and brand globalization capabilities continue to strengthen. The China Sport Show has announced that its fitness exhibition area has been upgraded to the "APFIT Asia Pacific Fitness & Healthy Living Zone," with a new brand identity officially released. The zone features a circular triangular structure and cobalt blue tones as core visual elements, conveying messages of stability, reliability, sustainable growth, and technological innovation.
The 2026 China Sport Show APFIT Asia Pacific Fitness & Healthy Living Zone has reached 110,000 square meters, bringing together 1,100 exhibitors across five core sectors: Professional Fitness & Bodybuilding, Sports Performance Assessment, Lightweight Fitness, Sports Rehabilitation & Wellness, and Fitness Equipment Supply Chain. The zone will showcase world-leading fitness equipment and cutting-edge health technology, with endless new products in both commercial and home segments: from Konlega's 3D full-motion trajectory elliptical trainer, to Johnson's Matrix track-style treadmill, to Impulse's LESS strength new products, and YIJIAJIA's debut AI series training equipment – fully demonstrating the upgrade path of Chinese fitness equipment from "manufacturing" to "intelligent manufacturing."
