From International Exhibitions to Mass Fitness: Global Fitness Industry Embarks on Multi-Dimensional Growth in March 2026
In late March, the global fitness industry continues to emit positive signals.
In late March, the global fitness industry continues to emit positive signals. From the successful conclusion of the IWF Shanghai International Fitness Expo at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center, to Australian fitness brand Fitstop's launch of the new fitness competition Global Games, to the grand celebration of the first-ever "International Tai Chi Day" – a multi-dimensional, cross-sector integrated industry landscape is unfolding. The Runtoway Fitness team, with over two decades of international trade experience, notes that through these intensive industry dynamics, one can clearly capture the profound transformations underway in the global fitness market across three dimensions: technology empowerment, event innovation, and cultural heritage.
Exhibition Review: IWF Shanghai Concludes, Demonstrating Global Appeal of Chinese Manufacturing
From March 13-15, the 13th IWF Shanghai International Fitness Expo was successfully held at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center, with multiple core metrics hitting record highs. The overall exhibition area expanded by over 30% compared to the previous edition, bringing together more than 1,000 domestic and international brands across commercial fitness equipment, sports leisure products, AI smart fitness and rehabilitation training solutions, nutrition and wellness, and other categories.
The expo's international influence continued to rise – overseas visitor pre-registrations increased by 155.09% compared to the same period last year, with professional buyers from 116 countries and regions securing their spots in advance, bringing clear procurement needs to this industry event. These figures indicate that amid the profound evolution of global trade patterns, China's sports and fitness industry, with its comprehensive supply chain and innovation capabilities, has become a "land of opportunity" in the eyes of global buyers.
The highlight of this year's expo was undoubtedly the "AI Sports & Smart Fitness Zone." From AI visual recognition-based workout systems to intelligent customized strength equipment and one-stop smart fitness solutions, the zone vividly demonstrated the transformation of sports and fitness from "traditional manufacturing" to "smart services". Companies such as Yushu, BODYPARK, and exoFit showcased their smart fitness equipment, drawing enthusiastic crowds and vividly illustrating how AI is redefining the scientific boundaries of fitness.
The "AI Sports & Smart Fitness Ecosystem Conference," held on the first day of the expo, brought together industry elites to engage in in-depth discussions on empowering traditional industries with "new quality productive forces," providing clear guidance for the industry's intelligent transformation.
As a "National Sports Industry Demonstration Base," Ningjin County officially established a strategic partnership with the IWF organizing committee at the expo's opening ceremony. 126 Ningjin enterprises made a collective appearance with over 100 product varieties, fully demonstrating Ningjin's strength as an industry base.
Event Evolution: Fitstop Launches Global Games, Functional Fitness Sector Continues to Segment
In the functional fitness event space, the global competitive landscape is welcoming a new player. In late March, Australian functional fitness brand Fitstop officially announced the launch of its new fitness competition – Global Games – scheduled to take place in Singapore, Los Angeles, and Brisbane in 2026.
The event aims to bring together athletes, members, and the wider training community through performance-based challenges and team competition. The competition features a points-based format with structured workout stations aligned with Fitstop's four core training pillars – Perform, Lift, Condition, and Sweat – with every rep completed, weight lifted, and time achieved counting toward the final score.
Global Games is open to all fitness levels, with two divisions available: "ALL STAR" for everyday athletes ready to level up, and "PRO" for elite performers at the top of their game – demonstrating the event's balance between accessibility and competitiveness. Pete Hull, CEO and Founder of Fitstop, stated: "Global Games represents the evolution of our competitive culture. By creating our own competition, Fitstop becomes more than a place to train. We become the stage where our community performs."
The launch arrives at a moment of considerable momentum in the functional fitness competition sector. Following HYROX's global explosion and F45's recent Peak500 launch, Fitstop is now entering the arena. The continued rise of the race economy is driving specialized demand for professional training equipment.
Cultural Phenomenon: First-Ever "International Tai Chi Day" Celebrated Globally, Traditional Martial Art Experiences Revival
On March 21, the world celebrated the first-ever "International Tai Chi Day." This international holiday, initiated by China, sparked a wave of tai chi culture across Shandong Province and around the globe.
In Weifang, Shandong, over 500 tai chi enthusiasts dressed in uniform attire, representing various styles including tai chi boxing, tai chi fan, tai chi broadsword, and tai chi sword, jointly performed a fusion version of 16-form tai chi. The city's first Tai Chi Championship, lasting three months, kicked off simultaneously.
In Yantai, under the theme "Good Luck Shandong, Tai Chi Together," over 10,000 participants joined the activities, with the tai chi spirit sweeping across the city – from urban communities to rural squares, from university campuses to scenic commercial districts.
In Zaozhuang, the Shandong Province Tai Chi Exhibition for the first International Tai Chi Day, along with the launch ceremony for the 16th Shandong Provincial Fitness Games Tai Chi Competition, took place in Tengzhou, featuring seven spectacular performances showcasing the graceful strength of Chinese martial arts and the profound heritage of traditional culture.
Cities including Dezhou, Rizhao, Weihai, Qingdao, Liaocheng, and Heze also organized diverse tai chi activities. According to statistics, over 10,000 people participated in the first International Tai Chi Day events in Shandong alone, covering communities, schools, and rural areas – truly achieving widespread promotion of tai chi culture.
Behind this cultural phenomenon lies a global reawakening of interest in traditional wellness practices. Tai chi, as a treasure of traditional Chinese culture, with its philosophy of "harmony between heaven and humanity" and its contemporary value for physical health, is attracting more and more modern people seeking physical and mental wellbeing.
Policy Direction: Deep Integration of Digital Technology and Mass Fitness Becomes National Priority
On the policy front, promoting the deep integration of digital technology with mass fitness has become an important direction. Cui Haixia, a National People's Congress representative, recently pointed out that digital technology enables the systematic collection, analysis, and processing of public fitness activity data, simulating human thinking and intelligence to achieve perception, utilization, and regulation of the fitness process – providing richer and more scientifically grounded possibilities for mass fitness activities.
Addressing challenges such as the absence of a technical application standard system in the early stages of digital technology and fitness integration, Cui recommended strengthening data collection and application, accelerating the establishment of technical application standard systems, and leveraging the opportunity to revise the National Fitness Regulations and develop the National Fitness Plan (2026-2030) to introduce special provisions for "digitalization of national fitness".
This policy direction echoes the "AI + Fitness" trend showcased at the expo, suggesting that smart fitness will evolve from market-driven exploration toward a phase of policy-guided standardization.
